What
is Badminton at UCLA?
The
Club is representative of the badminton community here at
the University
of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), as a member of the
Club
Sports program run under the Center
for Student Programming in association with the Department
of Cultural and Recreational Affairs (CRA).
Our mission: introduce, promote and expound on badminton
to the UCLA community and simultaneously provide greater
outside exposure of the sport to our members through such
avenues as coaching and our very own Bruin
Open, hosted annually on our picture-perfect, rolling-hills
campus.

In
General (see sidebar for quarter-specific schedule)

Club
History
The Club saw a resurgence in membership in 1996 when Doris
Ng (President) and Tony Chow revived interest. When Doris
went on to study abroad in China in 1998, Nathan Wang took
over and presided until 2002, dedicating four of his years
at UCLA to leading the Club and bringing membership numbers
up to around the 40 mark. In the 2002-03 season, students
Po-Chi Fung and Larry Wong led together as Co-Presidents.
In 2003,
Jason Lee began his two-year term as President, under whose
leadership the Club and Team revamped themselves and UCLA
Badminton shattered record marks in membership, national
rankings, funding, Bruin Open initiation and participation,
intra-Club tournament experience, and overall level of interest
on campus.
Jason,
Irene Wong, Jessica Fung, and Max Moroz have been instrumental
in bringing and maintaining initial structure and growth
of the Club, reinventing the identity of UCLA Badminton
in the first three years of the revamping process, with
aid from Michael Li and Chris Ling.
In addition
to Irene's work in reshaping the funding policies of the
program, she became one of the first 9 initial voting members
of the Club Sports Executive Council, whose purpose is to
oversee all club sports on campus of which UCLA Badminton
is a constituent.
As of
May of 2006, our member count reached almost 93, easily
more than doubling that of only three years ago, with no
signs of a reversing trend.
A cabinet
has also been formed to facilitate specific aspects of the
Club along with the President. Currently, these positions
are Vice President, Treasurer, Match Coordinators, Equipment
Chair, Social Chair, Webmaster, and Executive Advisor.

Website
History
Here's a snip-it of the life of the Club on the World Wide
Web. The website had been hosted on Yahoo's Geocities since
1997 but became dormant some time later. In March 2003,
we received a new URL, this time hosted directly on UCLA's
servers, parallel to the changes being made to the Club.
In so far as we know, there have been two webmasters, Tony
Chow for the Geocities site (now defunct) and Jason Lee
for the UCLA-hosted site (the one you're viewing).
