About us

Since 1969, the Asian Education Project (AEP), now known as the Asian American Tutorial Project (AATP), has gone to Castelar Elementary School in Los Angeles Chinatown to tutor immigrant children in the hopes of providing them with the skills and guidance necessary to assimilate into mainstream society and to gain access to a higher education. As the largest and second oldest member of UCLA's Community Service Commission (CSC), AATP has been at the forefront of the movement to meet the pressing educational needs of the immigrant youth population of the Chinatown community.

Annually, AATP has a pool of approximately 200 tutors from UCLA, USC, and Occidental College who provide tutorial and mentoring services every Saturday morning to the students of Castelar Elementary. Although the majority of the community we serve are of Chinese ancestry, our tutors hail from all corners of the world. The diversity they bring to the program greatly enhances our efforts to instill multi-cultural awareness and tolerance into our children.

AATP welcomes anyone who is dedicated and loves kids to join. We guarantee this to be a truly rewarding experience not only for your tutee, but for yourself as well. What makes AATP so successful is the strong bond every tutor forges with his/her tutee. The experiences shared last a lifetime. AATP is also a wonderful way to make new friends while serving your community.

Our Tutorial/Mentoring Session Structure:

Saturdays (10:00 a.m – 12:00 p.m.)

10:00 - 11:15 a.m.: The first hour of each session is devoted strictly to academic tutoring. Worksheets, textbooks, and storybooks are available for your use. Additional resources are also available at the nearby Chinatown Library.

11:15 - 12:00 p.m.: The second hour is free time for you and your tutee to engage in various activities. Sports equipment as well as board games are available for you to checkout. Grade leaders also plan special activities such as arts and crafts, spelling bees, and math contests.

**You are always free to design your own lessons or plan your own mentoring activities.

After the site visit, many tutors go out for lunch in Chinatown, a good opportunity for you to get a taste of Chinese cuisine and to meet your fellow tutors.
