Friends of ABS
|
We are a networking organization and have been successful in arousing curiosity and interest from several other nationally-renowned and student-based groups and individuals. The following is a list of "friends" both within and outside of UCLA. National Organizations: The world's largest space technology public outreach organization! UC Berkeley: Dr. Greg Schultz NSF Postdoctoral fellow at the Space Science Lab at UC Berkeley As a graduate student here at UCLA, he was a teaching associate in the Ge70 Cluster course, "Evolution of the Cosmos and Life", for the 1998-1999 academic year. He has contributed much to our interest in AstroBiology and has been instrumental in the formation of ABS. PICTURES of Greg with Laurel & Jason on our trip to theBioastronomy '99 Meeting in Hawaii. Take a look at Greg's PAPER entitled "Astrobiology Education and Outreach: New Interdisciplinary Initiatives with Undergraduate GE and an 'Astrobiology Society.'" This paper documents the GE cluster course mentioned above, and some of the background behind the AstroBiology Society at UCLA, the first known group of its kind formed at any university! Note: the paper is in PDF format, which requires Adobe Dr. Jere Lipps Dr. Lipps teaches an astrobiology course at Berkeley, similar
to Greg Schultz's UCLA GE70 seminar. All sorts of students are
enthusiastically involved in this class. The OUTSTANDING course web
page is here: Dr. Lipps is also actively involved, along with planet-hunter Geoff Marcy, in current efforts to enlist UC Berkeley as a new member of NASA's growing Astrobiology Institute. Stay tuned to see what happens.. Go Cal! UCLA:
Victoria Vesna Links to some of her work: The Design | Media Arts dept has an outstanding Monday University of Colorado, Boulder: Dr. Bruce JakoskyProfessor of Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics Principal Investigator of the Center for Astrobiology at the University of Colorado Dr. Jakosky, in addition to being Principal Investigator of one of NASA's Astrobiology Institute members, teaches an undergraduate Extraterrestrial Life course at CU. He also has written a terrific book, The Search for Life on Other Planets, which we used in Greg Schultz's GE70 seminar. Dr, Jakosky has some great views and ideas about the PHILOSOPHY of astrobiology and of science in general. He shared these views with us in his visit to ABS on 11-2-99. Check out some PICTURES. Also, take a look at University of Colorado's EXCELLENT
astrobiology web site here:
Dr.
Stephen J. Mojzsis As a post-doctoral student at UCLA and advisor to ABS, Steve provided an immense amount of support and guidance to us. His enthusiasm for astrobiology and for his students has travelled with him to the University of Colorado, where he and Dr. Jakosky have seeded a second AstroBiology Society, modeled after ABS.
