Who are we?

ABS Outreach is composed of students from many different fields, all with a common goal: to inspire the next generation to become involved in Astrobiology. UCLA's ABS Outreach officers in the past have worked with the Nasa Astrobiology Institute's (NAI) Education and Public Outreach program to contribute research to the NAI Pathfinder project. In an attempt to promote the new science of Astrobiology, we are also actively engaged in educational activities and are attending workshops with the aim of stimulating the formation of similar groups worldwide. We will continue to expand our outreach activities, with the eventual goals of inspiring and helping to prepare the next generation of Astrobiologists, promoting the formation of more student groups and seeing the implementation of a uniform university curriculum in Astrobiology.

What have we done?

  • Pathfinder Research
Astrobiology Pathfinder, NAI project with the aim to produce a tool for students of all ages to find paths toward becoming Astrobiologists. The UCLA ABS Outreach performed web and literature research and contributed content to the Pathfinder project. With this information, the Astrobiology Pathfinder would allow students to select from a series of areas of scientific interest and regional locations to personalize their paths to Astrobiology research as a career. It would also highlight internships, opportunities at science and technology museums and courses at various colleges and universities.
  • Trips
ABS members are hoping to make Astrobiology known around the world by attending international events and sharing our ideas with educational leaders. Our goal is not only to help in the creation of new Astrobiology societies but also to acquire knowledge during these conferences that we can use in our own careers and to guide others.

UCLA ABS officers represented UCLA at the NASA Astrobiology Science Conference 2002. During this appearance, our accomplishments as an official society were presented to a collection of prominent scientists and educators. As a result, one of the UCLA ABS Pathfinder researchers was invited as a speaker to the Second Annual NASA/NSF/TSU Research Symposium in Nashville, Tennessee to encourage and assist in the creation of more student Astrobiology societies. We also sent two members to Europe for the second European Workshop on Exo/Astrobiology in Graz, Austria, in hopes of motivating students to form societies as well as encourage universities to adopt Astrobiology curricula by sharing our own experiences in this area.

What do we do now?

  • Astrobiology Presentation Design

  • ABS Outreach officers are designing presentations intended to introduce K-12 students to the exciting field of Astrobiology and to encourage their further pursuit of the sciences.

  • Outreach Activities

  • ABS Outreach officers are participating with the Space Generation Foundation and NASA in the Explorers Wanted program. We have sent officers to elementary and middle school classrooms and auditoriums to speak about the Mars Rovers and get kids excited about space, science and math. The students learn through interactive Mars-related activities, questions about space and the latest Mars missions, and an action-packed computer-animated video courtesy of NASA.

What are we planning on doing?

  • Astrobiology Expedition Project
Starting next fall, our group will visit high schools in the Los Angeles area to present "Astrobiology: Part of Your Future?". "Astrobiology: Part of Your Future?" is a power point presentation put together this summer with the support and guidance of NAI. It is designed to make Astrobiology a new career option in the minds of prospective college students. To do so we will provide them with a list of relevant books, facts about the universities offering courses and research in Astrobiology, career possibilities in the field as well as information on the steps necessary to become an Astrobiologist.
