The African Education Project (AEP) is a mentoring project of UCLA's African Student Union that targets Compton's New Wilmington Arms community with a program that aims to raise the low test scores and expectations of its young residents. During weekly tutoring sessions at Bursch Elementary School, AEP combines a curriculum of vocabulary, reading and math exercises with exciting cultural events and presentations in order to encourage student interest and participation in their education and their community. Diagnostic tests have demonstrated a marked improvement in test scores of past AEP participants, while volunteers have also observed a development of crucial leadership and social skills among students.
