Top Ten Reasons to Join AEP

10. You want to save a dining hall swipe and get two delicious free meals in the process (AEP serves breakfast and lunch each Saturday).

9. Your roommate is annoying and/or you're sick of sulking in your room all weekend with nothing to do.

8. You confused it with Alpha Epsilon Pi.

7. Because, let's be honest, you're applying to grad school and you can't exactly write "Did a 20 second keg stand" on your resume.

6. The judge ordered you to 50 hours of community service.

5. You think our exclusive t-shirts are hot.

4. You want to dazzle your friends and be the star of any cocktail party with your vast knowledge of African and African-American history and culture.

3. You yearn for the opportunity to be part of a great team and make awesome connections.

2. You want to develop valuable leadership skills and help the community in the process.

1. You remember the satisfaction you felt when you got in to UCLA, and you want others to experience that feeling. Whether UCLA was your first choice or your last choice, it is not an option for about 80 percent of high school students in the Compton Unified School District who fail to meet the basic requirements for admission to a four-year university.*

*Calculated based on 2002-2003 School Accountability Report Cards for Centennial, Compton, and Dominguez High Schools.

What do AEP volunteers do?

UCLA Student volunteers travel to Compton's Bursch Elementary each Saturday to meet with students. On site, volunteers are responsible for leading small group academic enhancement activities as well as maintaining a fun and open environment conducive to learning. Some volunteers may be asked to prepare brief presentations to teach the students and other volunteers about African and African-American history and culture, or to complete other tasks during the week to assist the AEP staff.
