Mission: Asian Pacific Health Corps (APHC) at the University of California, Los Angeles, is a student volunteer organization that aims to promote healthy lifestyles among disadvantaged Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities. Founded in 1980, APHC has been devoted to its mission, serving local API communities that have minimal access to healthcare and limited financial resources. Though APHC first began with the objective of providing hypertension screenings, it has been constantly modifying its vision to meet the changing needs of the community. Today, APHC offers a broader program of education and services to combat the risk factors for the two leading causes of death in the API population: cancer and cardiovascular disease.
Methodology:
- APHC attends health sites in the Los Angeles area throughout the academic quarter.
- Organize and host 3 health fairs every academic year (one per quarter).
- Host FOBT (fecal occult blood test) kit distribution workshops to encourage early detection of colorectal cancer during the Winter and Spring quarters.
As an APHC member, you will:
- Learn more about cardiovascular disease, obesity, and cancer: During trainings and general meetings, volunteers will be given lectures on these health issues.
- Directly interact with participants: At each site, trained volunteers will get the opportunity to educate and screen individuals. The three screenings volunteers provide are: blood pressure, body mass index/body fat, and carbon monoxide.
- Learn more about possible careers in the health field: APHC will invite speakers from various health fields to talk about their occupations. Members may also participate in our medical, dental, and optometry student mentorship programs.
- Experience new cultures: Throughout the year, APHC screens participants from a variety of ethnic communities in Los Angeles.
- Have leadership opportunities: APHC members will have numerous opportunities throughout the year to serve on various planning committees for health fairs co-sponsored by APHC.
- Get letters of recommendation: APHC directors will take note of exceptionally dedicated volunteers and will make an effort to get to know all APHC members.
- Get academic credits: You may be qualified to receive credits for you community service hours by enrolling in Civic Engagement (CE195s) with the Center for Community Learning.
- Meet new people with similar goals and interests! Every quarter APHC will organize various social events to allow members get to know one another while having lots of fun!
