Giving Voice to Hmong-American Experiences: Conference Description The purpose of this Conference is to provide a four-hour forum for the Association of Hmong Students at UCLA to engage in dialogue with UCLA administrators, faculty in all disciplines, undergraduate and graduate students, and community professionals concerning the following issues: (1) The unmet needs and concerns of Hmong-American students at UCLA; (2) The need for lower and upper division University courses that teach about Hmong history, language and culture, their socioeconomic conditions and political participation, and their contemporary experiences in California, the United States, and around the world; and (3) The possible ways that UCLA faculty and scholars can incorporate and address the concerns of Hmong Americans through teaching and research curriculums. This dialogue is necessary so that students, faculty, and administrators can more fully understand the urgent concerns and needs of not only students, but also Hmong-Americans. It is hoped that through the exchange of knowledge and information, participants will be able to coordinate, design and implement ways that more effectively address this population’s needs and concerns, especially its lack of access to public institutions of higher learning and research opportunities.
