Working with Other Organizations

AWA members also volunteer off campus. Here are a few of our ongoing commitments:

  • California Wildlife Center
AWA members started volunteering at the California Wildlife Center in January 2003. As volunteers we have worked with harbor seals, opossum, sea gulls, hawks, fox squirrels, mice, hummingbirds, pigeons, and the list goes on and on. It has been especially rewarding to help and care for animals that we are not accustomed to working with in our daily lives. If you love helping animals of all shapes and sizes we strongly encourage you to volunteer at CWC because there is truly nothing like it.

  • Feral Cat Alliance
Feral Cat Alliance (FCA) is a great advocate of TNR or Trap, Neuter, and Return. They work all over the Los Angeles area trapping feral cats, spaying or neutering them and then returning them back to their original location so that the cats can happily live out their life in familiar surroundings. In addition, TNR helps eliminate the problem of overpopulation. AWA has just started a relationship with FCA in order to help them with their mission. Christi, the founder of FCA, spoke at one of our meetings and talked about the organization and their volunteer opportunities.

  • Friends of Animals
If you enjoy working with cats and dogs you should definitely volunteer at Friends of Animals! It is a non-profit adoption center in West Los Angeles. They need volunteers to socialize the cats and perform daily cleaning of the cages. They also need help socializing and walking the dogs at the center. Carol, the volunteer coordinator, is very eager to talk to potential volunteers. If you would like to help out please contact AWA for more info. The cats and dogs need your help any time during the week! Contact us today so you can get started as soon as possible!

  • SPCA LA
We recently attended the SPCA LA volunteer orientation in Long Beach and got acquainted with their policies and procedures as well as their mission to assist all the animals that need help. We are going to begin our volunteer services this summer at a very close location to UCLA, the Westside Pavilion Center. There is a great deal of activities to participate in such as adoption shows, dog training and socializing, cat care, grooming, foster care, etc. If you live near UCLA and want to help animals close to home then SPCA LA can definitely work for you. You must attend an orientation first before you begin your volunteer work. If you want to learn more about SPCA LA please visit their website

If you would like more information please email us at awa@ucla.edu. We would be glad to share our experience with you, answer your questions and provide you with all the necessary contact info.
