More Dharma talks for ready listeners!
Thursday, April 27, 2006
We have two new rather exciting Dharma events for you all, so please let me share the news:

Tuesday, May 11th, Venerable Miao Hsi from Hsi Lai Temple will be visiting us to give a talk on "Buddhism and Friendship", from 5:00-6:00pm at Ackermann 2412. Come and learn about the Buddhist approach to friends and friendship, it might be a bit different than what you might guess.

Next, quite a bit later next month on, Thursday May 18th, the Tag Dag Rinpoche from the Gelupga Buddhist Association will pay us a visit and offer us teachings about how to build wisdom and self-confidence through Buddhist Practice. The talk will be held from 5:00-6:00pm at Ackerman 2412.

I hope to see you all there!

And remember to meditate before your midterms, a clear mind is a skillful one.

Calendar update: new Weekend Events!
Wednesday, April 12, 2006
Anyone who might have refreshed our calendar page within the last thirty seconds may be dismayed to see the whole lot of events get disappear and a new series appear in their place. I assure you, blessed webpage viewer, that all is well.

What is actually going on is we are shuffling our speakers around due to availability. I'll post the new dates as soon as we get some confirmations.

But, what is exciting is that we have a whole slew of new events for you all to enjoy!

Saturday, April 22nd we will be teaming up with our Catholic friends at the UCC and going to Flower Village, a Catholic Nunnery near San Diego to help the Nuns maintain the grounds. We had a lot of fun raking leaves last time, and its a great community service opportunity. Please e-mail us if you would like to come, and if you can provide a ride.

Saturday, May 6th we are teaming up with with Dharma Vijaya Buddhist Vihara to celebrate Buddha Day [Vesak Puja] at the City of Angels Church located at 5550 Grosvenor Blvd in Los Angeles. It will be a great evening of regional music, dance, and chanting from many different Buddhist countries.

Finally, for when you're weary from studying for finals, Saturday May 27th, we'll be going on retreat to Deer Park Monastery.

Details about all these events as well as a new schedule for out speakers will be posted in the coming weeks.

New UBA T-shirt in progress
Thursday, April 06, 2006
The hard working, tireless UBA staff is designing a brand-new T-shirt for our members, and we would like your feedback about which of the following quotes you would prefer to have on the back of the shirt.
So far, the quotes/sayings that we are considering are:

#1 - "Peace comes from within."
#2 - "With our thoughts, we make our world."
#3 - "Know emptiness. Be compassionate."
#4 - "The University Buddhist Association - Where suffering is optional."
#5 - "There is no spoon." ;)

Also, if any of you have other ideas for a saying to put on the back of the T-shirt, we would love to hear your feedback. Please email us at buddhist@ucla.edu and let us know what you think!

Meditation and Game Night
Wednesday, April 05, 2006
Next week, our meditation session is moving back to its normal time, Tuesday, 7:30pm at the UCC. After we're done sitting you're all invited to come to our post-meditation game night. We have a few things in mind, like Mafia and Cranium, but bring your own favourite games to meditation and we'll have loads of fun.

Last week, Rev. Kusala talked about his new series of podcasts "On Being a Monk", so be sure to check those out and the new installments as they become available.

Tuesday, April 04, 2006
Greetings to all of you out on the interweb, and welcome to the new UBA website and blog! Things are a bit shakey so far, but this new format should allow us here at the UCLA UBA to bring you even faster and more up-to-date information regarding the activities of the club and the Southern Californian buddhist community.

If this is your first time here, please click around on the links above to see what we're all about. I hope to see you all soon.

Much Metta,
