NEW MAILINGS LIST: The UBA Mailing List has moved to Google! I apologize for the hiccups in the past weeks during the move. As of yet, not everyone has migrated over to the new list, so if you have friends who have not yet signed up, be sure to keep them abreast of the new events and to sign up by sending a blank e-mail to:
uba_online-subscribe@googlegroups.com
WEEKLY MEDITATION [Every Tuesday]: Otherwise, our weekly meditations continue this Tuesday, April 24th, and every Tuesday thereafter from 5:00 to 6:30 at the University Catholic Center located at 633 Gayley Ave, right across the street from the UCLA campus. Our meditation and dharma talks are given by Rev. Kusala, and some recordings of previous talks can be listened to at www.dharmatalks.info
BUDDHA DAY 2007 [May 5th]: The biggest event of the year, the 2007 SCUBA Buddha Day Celebration at UC Irvine is coming up in a couple of weeks, on Saturday May 5th. Starting at 2:30, it should be an entertaining and inspiring evening of dharma and performance by monastics from many different tempels and traditions as well students and performance groups from all over Southern California. This event is being put on by USC, UCI, UCR, as well as UCLA, so we need to come out and represent our school. RSVP by e-mailing buddhist@ucla.edu, and let us know if you need a ride to the Irvine campus, or if you can provide one.
SUBMISSIONS FOR THE UBA NEWSLETTER [Deadline May 8th]: Likewise, I would like to very excitedly announce that we are accepting submissions for a the first issue of the UBA newsletter. Submissions should be short to medium length articles [under a thousand words] about anything regarding Buddhism: personal experiences, Buddhist book reviews, a Buddhist perspective on a given topic, and such. Anyone can submit to the newsletter, students and non-students, Buddhists and non-Buddhists. Please send your submissons in the body of an e-mail, or as an attachment before May 8th [that's two weeks, folks!] to buddhist@ucla.edu, with "Newsletter" in the subject line.

RSVP Notice and "Paramita" Listening Party
Friday, April 06, 2007
|
Greetings Fellow Travellers!
I'm sending this out a bit early for two reasons. One is because doing things early is certainly better than doing them late, and the other is because I want to give you folks a chance to RSVP for one of the upcoming events being presented by the Department of Buddhist Studied.
Tuesday, April 17th, the Department of Buddhist Studies presents "Tashi Lhunpo and the Panchen Lama: Past, Present, and Future", a lecture by Khen Rinpoche Lobzang Tsetan, the recently appointed Abbott of Tashi Lhunpo, in 306 Royce Hall from 4:00-5:30. This wonderful event requires an RSVP to the Department by APRIL TENTH. That's this Tuesday, folks, so send an e-mail to rharwood@support.ucla.edu or call (310)206-3072 and let them know right away that you want to go and learn all about the Panchen Lama.
In other news, Rev. Kusala will not be able to make it this Tuesday, April 10th to our weekly meditation meeting, because he has a prior engagement to participate in the Monks in the West conference. However, in his place we will be having a listening party "Paramita", Rev. Heng Sure's newly released CD of original Buddhist Folk Songs. We will listen to a few of the songs, talk about our reactions, and have a short meditation. As usual, we will be meeting at 5:00pm at the University Catholic Center located on 633 Gayley Ave, though we might end a bit early. Our regular Dharma Talks should resume next week.
Until then, have a wonderful week.

Welcome back, and much more news!

Greetings Fellow Travellers!
Welcome back one and all to UCLA, and to another exciting, enlightening and endearing quarter of the University Buddhist Association. Spring has a way of being the best quarter of all, with your President trying his best to leave a bright legacy and a bright future for the UBA, staff elections, and the fabled Souther California University Buddhist Association 2007 Buddha Day Celebration coming on May 5th, along with a regular milieu of speakers, events, and trips.
First, I have a couple of interesting web developments to tell you all about. Our own website is debuting with its new color scheme - this time with a refreshing new orange flavor. All the same great content is present, with some brand new links, an updated calendar, and a citrus twist. I would also like to announce the unveiling of www.socalbuddhist.com, the SCUBA website. Right now, it serves as a hub to the website's of the individual member school's, with a bit of Buddha Day content, but in the future we should have some unique SCUBA content. Let your family and friends at other schools know they have a Buddhist club in their area, spread the word!
This Tuesday, April 3rd, also marks the return of our Weekly Meditation sessions for the Spring Quarter, once again each Tuesday, from 5:00-6:30om at the University Catholic Center located on 633 Gayley Avenue, right across the street from Campus, our Chaplain Rev. Kusala will give us a insightful and clear Dharma Talk, lead us in a bit of sitting meditation, and offer a loving kindness verse. Afterwards, we will be heading to Boba Loca in Westwood so we can all catch up and regale each other with our Spring Break adventures, and have a pleasant time.
If your schedule allows you to make it to meditation for the first time, this Tuesday is a great time to start! If you'd like to hear what you may have missed, some of Rev. Kusala's talks are available on his website www.dharmatalks.info
Also, early next week, Monday, April 9th, The UCLA Department of Buddhist Studies presents "Meditation and Metaphysics: On Their Mutual Relationship in South Asian Buddhism", a lecture by Eli Franco, from 3:00-4:00pm at 243 Royce Hall. The Buddhist Studies Department is having a number of great events this quarter, some of which will require an RSVP to attend. Be sure to stay tuned to the UBA for deadlines and future events!
Otherwise, welcome back, and I look forward to one more great quarter together,
-- John Gill University Buddhist Association
