Taking Refugre at Hsi Lai
Sunday, May 20, 2007
|
Most of our upcoming events remain unchanged from the previous week, though I would like to specially draw your attention to the Hsi Lai Event, as it has been recently brought to my attention that, on that same day, there will be a refuge taking ceremony.
Taking Refuge is the ceremony by which someone officially becomes a lay disciple of the Buddha, and embraces the Buddha as one's teacher, the Dharma as one's teaching, and the Sangha as one's community. Also, the ceremony offers a chance to make a serious commitment to following the five Buddhist precepts. This coming weekend is a wonderful opportunity to take refuge if you have not already done so, or to support those who may be doing so for the first time. So, if you can make it, by all means RSVP by e-mailing buddhist@ucla.edu!
If you'd like to know more, there's a lovely eBook by Bhikkhu Bodhi on the topic called Going for Refuge and Taking the Precepts, hosted at Access To Insight.

Greetings, fellow travellers!
The Buddha Day Celebration this weekend ended up going on without a hitch, and we got a majority of it on tape - which should surface in one form or another soon enough. We have some great events in the making, which I'll share with you as soon as we get confirmations, but as for now here's what we have to look forward to in the coming weeks:
HSI LAI FIELDTRIP [Sunday, May 27th]: This coming Memorial Day Weekend, the UBA will be making a trip to Hsi Lai Temple in Hacienda Heights for their own Buddha's Birthday celebration. We will be leaving from Sproul Turnaround at 8:30am, Sunday morning so we can arrive at the temple for their Buddha's Birthday Parade, Chanting Service, as well as their vegetarian Food Fair. Please RSVP for the trip by e-mailing buddhist@ucla.edu.
DRBY RETREAT TALKS ONLINE: Some of the talks from the Dharma Realm Buddhist Youth Spring Conference this past spring break have been uploaded to their website, including out very own Rev. Kusala's talk "The Reluctant Bodhisattva". You can download them for free by visiting the DharmaRadio website.
