Week 5 Updates

We hope you're staying cool in this hot weather! May we remind you that the UCC is always kept at a very cool temperature? In case you are in need of some free air conditioning AND would like to come learn more about Buddhism, come see us at our regular Tuesday night meeting, 5:30-7pm, at the UCC at 633 Gayley. Our meetings feature a dharma discussion facilitated by Rev. Kusala and are followed by a chance to ask questions and then to meditate.
Also, a big thank you to everyone who came to our social event last weekend - it was a great success! We might plan for another one by the end of the quarter, so keep an eye out for that. As for this weekend, Jason Kung, one of our regular members, has sent us information about an event at a Long Beach monastery that is planning a children's celebration on Sunday. As a result, they would love to have volunteers to help set things up for the event on Saturday as well as Sunday. More information is available here. Most of the UBA staff will likely not be able to attend, but Jason has offered to drive a carload on Sunday if anyone is interested - shoot us an email at ucla.uba.online@gmail.com if you are!

Week 4 - Social Event!

Hi everyone,
We hope you had a great weekend and we hope that midterm season is not stressing you all out too much! We at the UBA offer two chances this week to take the time to enjoy the present moment with our weekly meditation meeting and our first social event of the quarter, a potluck dinner and movie night.
First, our weekly meditation meeting is, as usual, on Tuesday night from 5:30-7 pm, in the UCC (633 Gayley). Reverend Kusala will facilitate a dharma discussion and we will have the chance to ask questions and finish off with a meditation. We hope to see you all there!
Then, Friday evening (April 25th) we are planning our potluck and movie night social event. We will start with a potluck dinner at 6:30. We will be providing main dishes, so anything you would like to contribute - drinks, side dishes, desserts - would be greatly appreciated by all. It's all up to you and your proximity to a kitchen. After a delicious meal we will be watching the movie Seven Years in Tibet.

First Sutra Study this week!

Hello everybody!
First things first - apologies for the general lateness of the weekly updates so far this quarter in the process of figuring out weekend schedules and whatnot. But no fear, we should be back to the regular Sunday updates next weekend so that it gives everyone the chance to plan the rest of their week.
This week - that is, tomorrow - at our weekly meditation meeting, we'll be focusing on a particular Buddhist sutra. We're offering the sutra, on Sunita the Outcaste, for download so that everyone can read through it for themselves as we will be discussing it on Tuesday evening as we continue to explore Buddhism together.
Please do not regard this as homework - goodness knows we all have enough of that! - but rather as a chance to explore a topic in Buddhism in a little more depth. So feel free to give it a read-through, and we will provide a few extra copies at the meeting tomorrow night as well.
