CHAMPs is held on Saturdays throughout the academic year. Student volunteers from UCLA are provided transportation to the Angelina apartment complex, in Echo Park, where they are paired with a mentee. CHAMPs also shuttles program participants from the Casa Heiwa apartment complex, in Little Tokyo, to the Angelena apartments for site. Because of the array of ages and academic needs, children are separated into the K-6 program and the Teens Program (7-12 grades).Separating the children into groups allows our mentors to better meet the needs of every child. The K-6 program is further divided into three grade groups (K-2, 3-4, & 5-6) and is composed of three components: academic tutoring; arts and crafts projects relevant to the academic theme of the quarter, and recreation time. At the end of each quarter there is a field trip, which is open to participants who have regularly attended site and have consistantly followed CHAMPs rules. Teens receive tutoring in academic activities as well as workshops, guest speakers, field trips, and group discussions to encourage youth to be active participants in their community and to pursue a college education.
