What we are about: For High School Students
Our goal is to introduce high school students in the Los Angeles area to the rapidly developing world of biotechnology though “hands on” laboratory experience. We expose high school students to inquiry-based learning, the scientific process, and critical thinking. We aim to foster an appreciation of and interest in scientific research, while educating students about different career options in science. There are four components to the program, free benefits, and easy applications for high school teachers for their classes to attend CityLab at UCLA.
(UCLA Students should consult the Program and Events pages for details pertaining to their roles.)
We offer four components for high school classes:
- Our current biotechnology modules include the three topics of Forensics and DNA Fingerprinting, Sickle Cell Anemia, and Elisa (Enzyme Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay). (Teachers may choose which topic they would like us to teach.)
- High school students participating in the educational and hands-on laboratory exercises are seen in our photo gallery of recent high school sessions.
- We also try to mentor high school students and encourage them to apply to college.
- A quick tour of UCLA campus is also provided.
Logistics and Benefits Are Free to High Schools
- No Cost: All expenses will be taken care of by CityLab, so high schools are not expected to contribute financially.
- Convenient Scheduling on Weekends: CityLab sessions are held Saturdays from 9 am until roughly 2 pm.
- Free Transportation and Lunch: CityLab provides both lunch and bus transportation from high schools to UCLA and back.

If your high school class is interested in participating: Apply
Most of our available session dates for Spring 2009, listed above on this page, are filled.. If you are interested in participating in CityLab, please let us know which date works best for you at your earliest convenience, as the reserved dates are filling up quickly. We want to make sure your class gets a spot. We usually require a lower limit of 25 students and can accommodate up to about 50 to 70 students -- either from one school or split between two high schools.
We are anticipating an exciting Spring Quarter (April to June 2009) that is filled with new interesting modules, and we hope that you and your students will be a part of it! There will be more available sessions given in the Fall Quarter 2009 (September to December 2009). High schools are encouraged to apply as early as possible before spaces are filled.
