CityLab at UCLA: Program and Credit Course

The CityLab at UCLA Program

CityLab at UCLA is sponsored by the UCLA URC/CARE (Undergraduate Research Center - Center for Academic and Research Excellence). CityLab at UCLA is a program that provides enriching experiences for UCLA students who wish to step beyond just the research experience. These include opportunities to explore teaching, scientific writing and research careers.

CityLab is also a forum for UCLA students to learn effective teaching skills by executing hands-on lab exercises for Los Angeles High School students. UCLA students participate in the program as undergraduate assistants, teaching host high school students in a laboratory setting.

UCLA Student Options and Requirements

There are two avenues for UCLA student participation in CityLab at UCLA:

  1. Enrollment in a two-credit coursefor one quarter (repeatable for one additional quarter), or
  2. Volunteering.
The roles are very similar regardless of the student's status. Applicants who request enrollment but are not selected may be eligible to participate as a volunteer TA. A one-year (three-quarter) committment is requested regardless of a student's status.

Enrolled Students in Course MCDB 192B

UCLA undergraduate students participating in CityLab as undergraduates assistants have the option of enrolling in two units (letter grade) of MCDB 192B. If you choose to enroll in MCDB 192B, the grade received counts toward your cumulative GPA but does not satisfy any upper division course requirement. Repeat enrollment is allowed for one additional quarter, but two quarters of MCDB 192B are the maximum allowed.

Prerequisites for Credit Course

Sophomore standing or higher and completion of (or concurrent enrollment in) LS3.

Requirements for Enrolled UCLA Students

Throughout the quarter, all enrolled students must:

  1. Attend all Saturday Citylab sessions (four per each Quarter),
  2. Attend the Wednesday evening rehearsals held during the week of the session (four weeks per quarter), and
  3. Attent at least one setup session per quarter (the Friday before the Saturday CityLab session).
  4. Teach a didactic "station" in the classroom, at least once throughout the quarter (in a small group). Depending upon the module being used at the Saturday session, these will vary in topic, and will be assigned prior to the session.
  5. Act as a teaching assistant (TA) during the labs. All students will be TAs during the session, whether they are teaching a module or not. Usually, each TA will be assigned to 2-3 students, whom they will help run the lab for that day.
  6. There will also be other smaller assignments throughout the quarter, for which enrolled students will be responsible. These will be explained in further detail at the TA orientation session.

Grading for Enrolled Students

Letter grade only, based on timely attendance and session performance.
Note: Each session missed will result in the reduction of one full letter grade.

Enrolled students will be graded on their effort and participation during the Saturday session stations, and there will be criteria upon which grading is based. These will be explained and discussed at a later teaching assistant (TA) orientation session.

Volunteer UCLA Students

Requirements for Volunteering UCLA Students

Students who are volunteers are not required to teach a station, but will be required to:

  1. Attend all Saturday sessions (four per quarter),
  2. Attend all rehearsals on Wednesday evenings (four per quarter), and
  3. Attend at least one Friday evening setup per quarter.
  4. Serve as Teaching Assistants (TAs) assigned to a small group of 2-3 high school students during the lab component.
  5. There will also be other smaller assignments throughout the quarter, for which volunteering students will be responsible.
  6. Optional: Volunteer students may request to co-teach a didactic "station" in the classroom, along with enrolled students.
