Dia de los Muertos
(Day of the Dead)
In the tradition of the Day of the Dead, every year conciencia libre pays respect to the immigrants who have lost their lives at the militarized US Mexico Border as a result of Operation Gatekeeper. In fall 2000 six hundred crosses were displayed on-campus, which was a collaborative effort between UCLA students and jornaleros. These 600 crosses represented the deaths that occurred at the border since 1994 when Operation Gatekeeper was implemented.

Dia Internacional de la Mujer
(International Day of Women)
Dia de la Mujer (March 8) is a time to recognize those women who unselfishly contributed to the many social movements and have changed society. Every year in recognition we celebrate the lives of those women. conciencia libre portrays how globalization and US foreign policy affect women both in the US and in Latin America.

Dia Internacional del/de la Trabajador/a
(International Worker’s Day)
May Day, May 1st, represents the American people who in their fight for the eight-hour workday lost their lives for the labor movement in Chicago of 1886. conciencia libre thus honors US workers, the workers here at UCLA, and the workers around the world. conciencia libre invites a panel of diverse workers to share their testimonies with the goal of highlighting the hardships they endure and how we as students may get involved.
