conciencia libre was born in 1998 out of the experiences of students who came out of the Chicana/o Movement and struggle for National Liberation in Central America to create an organization that could respond to the globalized nature of oppresion, the changing composition of Latino communities in the US, and to confront and challenge the severe levels of poverty and exploitationfacing people on both sides of the border.

For this reason, conciencia libre is an internationalist progressive student organization that seeks to bridge the peoples of Latin America and the diverse Latina/o communities in the US together so that they will create transnational forms of resistance.
