The first meeting of the year is finally here! We will be holding a highly informative session on what to expect from UCLA Club Tennis this year, including practice times, upcoming tournaments, and what we're about, or simply to answer any questions you may have. We hope to see you there!

Our club will have a booth at this year's Club Sports Jamboree, held on the IM fields across from Pauley Pavillion. Be sure to stop by, or direct your friends our way! We're always interested in meeting new faces and spreading our love throughout UCLA's tennis community. Let's make this year an even bigger and better tennis lovefest!

Unlike last year, the first open practice of the year will be held at a separate date for organizational purposes. The second annual Tennis On Campus Kickoff tournament, however, will be held September 27th at LATC. Entries must be provided to Linda Milan by September 24th at 6PM. The following information needs to be included:

Play format: Singles, Doubles, or Mixed (2 events max per person)
Partner's name (doubles)
Skill Level: Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced

≡ 09/17/08 ≡ Ojakian Tennis Celebrity Pro-Am

What: Volunteering Opportunity to see some great tennis!
Where: UCLA's own LATC
When: October 10th and 11th
Deadline: Register by September 27th

This special tennis event benefits multiple charities, including the National MS Society. A silent auction will be held on October 10th, followed by a tournament and dinner at LATC on the 11th. The volunteer form may be downloaded here!

≡ 09/03/08 ≡ UCLA at US Open

2008 UCLA Graduates Tracy Lin and Riza Zalameda lost in the second round of the US Open to France's Stephanie Foretz/Camille Pin 6-3, 6-3 on Friday.

The UCLA duo had defeated Spain's Arantxa Parra/Carla Suarez Navarro 6-3, 6-4 the day before for their first-round victory.

≡ 09/02/08 ≡ Summer Session C Tournament

It was a day of mild upsets at the UCLA Sycamore Courts Monday, as Mike Lee defeated Mark Otten 6-3 in the finals of UCLA Club Tennis Summer Session C singles tournament.

Otten had taken out close friend Andrew Finley in one semifinal, 6-3, while Lee had knocked off a good friend of his own, Eric Radke, 6-2 in the other.

"Maybe it's a hunger thing," said Finley, trying to explain the string of three straight upsets between friends. Or maybe he was just describing the feeling in his stomach after a full afternoon of tennis.

Otten offered a different explanation. "I can't say I've ever seen Mike Lee play better," he lamented.

In the consolation final, Kingson Leung powered his way past Guavain Haulot, 6-2.
