February 6th, 2007 Mark and Anthony Honored by the SCTA

While the UCLA Club Tennis team practiced outside on the LATC courts, its founders - Mark Otten and Anthony Horsley - were inside the LATC penthouse in an honorary ceremony held by the Southern California Tennis Association (SCTA).

The awards bestowed that night were all for services voluntarily rendered by members of the Southern California community - among them, Senior Volunteer and Outstanding Official. Mark and Anthony's award specifically pointed towards their incredible efforts in promoting the development of the Tennis on Campus (ToC) program.

Mark, a hometown California man, and Anthony, from far away Jersey, began their epic UCLA tennis careers four years ago when they established and conducted UCLA's first Intramural Tennis League Tournament. It was only natural, then, to eventually invite the best that other college campuses had to an intercollegiate regional championship as word spread and intramural programs developed throughout Southern California.

Much to the astonishment and pleasure of all involved, every program's growth accelerated exponentially into an impressive organization dedicated to spreading the word and playing incredible collegiate tennis. Its formiddable stature could easily be seen in the latest Regional Championships; fourteen teams from ten Southern California universities participated in this two-day event, bringing in home-team crowds as well as visitors' fans.

For this amazing accomplishment the SCTA sought to recognize Mark and Anthony on Wednesday night in an awards ceremony that ran from 7 - 8:45 PM. United States Tennis Association (USTA) President Franklin Johnson spoke poignantly about "trying to promote the game, [getting] more people to play so we can promote change, [and encouraging] greater involvement [among college campuses]...Most importantly [we want to establish] diversity. It's not a 'rich white man's sport' anymore," as attendee and UCLA Club Tennis' Director of External Affairs, Emily Watt, noted.

With this latest Winter season drawing to a close after the exciting finale during February's Regional Championships, everyone is already beginning to look towards the future with heightened anticipation of even greater things to come.
