GLENDALE LEARNING PROGRAM

What is the UCLA GLP? GLP is a student-run, UCLA sponsored, community service program designed to provide primarily low-income students who are falling behind academically with an opportunity to "catch up" to grade level, meanwhile gaining the confidence and learning skills needed to be better, self-sufficient learners in the future.
Formerly known as the UCLA Armenian Tutorial Project (ATP), GLP aims to provide the same services to the entire population of Glendale students, not just those of Armenian descent.

What kind of volunteers does the UCLA GLP recruit? GLP volunteers consist of an ethnically diverse group of college students from UCLA, Occidental College, and Glendale Community College. Furthermore, we will have a select number of top high school students from Glendale High School volunteering.

What does the UCLA GLP offer? Our volunteers work one-on-one with an assigned student using activities prepared by the Program specific to that student’s needs. Our main goal is to get the student up to grade level in his/her area of difficulty. By working individually with the student, the volunteer has the opportunity to assume the role of a mentor for the child as well.

When does the UCLA GLP meet? We have 3 quarters throughout the year in which we meet, Fall, Winter, and Spring. During each quarter, we meet every Saturday from 10:00 am-12:30 pm.

Who are the UCLA GLP directors? Of our seven directors, six are students at UCLA, five of which went to schools in Glendale and currently reside in Glendale. Our final director is a student at Occidental College.

Why should students come to GLP? When students fall behind in class, it is often very hard for them to catch up on their own. Teachers just can afford the time to work individually with them and private tutoring can often be very expensive. They never get the individual attention and therefore never learn what they need for the next grade. So at the next grade level the difficulties grow and this cycle continues until they have fallen so far behind that they just give up. We want to intervene and help them catch up and make them realize that they can and will learn better in the future once they grasp the very important basics. This new knowledge will give them the confidence which, when compounded with the learning skills learned, will help them learn better and easier in the many years to come.

How teachers can help? If teachers notice that a student can use the services of GLP, he/she can tell the child’s parents about the program and together they can fill out an application for the student and return it to the main office where the GLP directors will personally pick them up. It is highly recommended that teachers help in this way because, with their input, GLP can maximize its help to the student.

How to get the child enrolled? Fill out an application and return it to the office where it can be picked up. The application is the best indicator of interest in the program. It gives us an idea of how many students we will have and in which areas we need tutors. If the teachers help out in filling the appropriate sections, the application can be also used to prepare the specific activities that will be used to help the student. We will be in regularly to pick up the applications personally. You can also fill out an application online now!
