Mahu was established in 1981 to address the needs of
the Asian and Pacific Islander, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
community on the UCLA campus and in
Southern California. It
is the oldest LGBT and API specific organization among the UC's. Since
its establishment, Mahu has broadened the scope of the universities
curriculum, providing venues for thoughtful discussion, inclusiveness,
and community outreach. Mahu creates comfortable, safe spaces for discussion,
support, empowerment and celebrating diversity within the LGBT/API community.
We network and program with other LGBT and API organizations, educating
in both our membership and the public. Pertinent topics include, but
are not limited to health, safer intercourse, breaking myths and stereotypes
of LGBT's and API's increasing awareness, visibility, and tolerance.
Mahu, in accordanance to federal and state law and university policy,
does not discriminate in membership selection, operating procedures,
activities and policies.
The term
mahu originally refers to transgender individuals in indigenous pre-colonial
Hawaii. The mahu were not only accepted in their communities, but were
also regarded as gifted and divine, possessing the qualities of both
the male and female gender. Since the islands were colonized, mahu has
broadened to include cross-dressers, drag queens, gays, lesbians, and
bisexuals. In modern times, it has also taken on a derogatory and negative
connotation. The word mahu was chosen to represent our organization
in order to restore the expression to its original meaning and shatter
the negative stereotypes that the colonists brought with them to the
islands.
