SERVICES

PIER services include not only free tutoring and mentoring, but we also hold monthly cultural workshops, field trips to UCLA, college workshops, and leadership conferences, among many other things.  Our services are designed to address the students; needs through their academic, cultural, and personal lives.  Through these services, we hope to increase the number of Pacific Islanders in higher education.

Mentoring

Mentors meet with each student 3 times a quarter for counseling sessions providing academic support as needed, but will focus primarily on helping their students understand and deal with the other issues that are affecting their academic life.

In order to effectively document and follow up on students, as well as to evaluate our project PIER counselors collect counseling forms from each student at the end of each counseling sessionAfter each counseling session, the student and the PIER advisor  both fill out a PIER Mentoring Session form.  Students are also asked to fill out a tracking packet which includes class information, extracurricular activities, grades, completed classes, and other essential information.  PIER uses the packets to monitor the students' progress as well as raise awareness among the students of the importance of setting and achieving academic goals, and to empower the students to diagnose and resolve their own problems so that they may become more self-reliant.

Tutoring

Our tutors and mentors are all college students trained to address students' needs and are capable of helping in all academic subjects.  During tutoring sessions PIER tutors divide students into groups according to academic subjects, and assigns each group a tutor.   Each student will come prepared for tutorial sessions with necessary homework, textbooks, and any questions they may have.   Tutors are not to give students answers, but should guide them in the proper direction so that they may learn how to resolve problems, study, and achieve their goals on their own.

Workshops

Tutors and mentors will hold academic workshops in order to develop students' study skills, college workshops to familiarize them with the college application process.   Cultural workshops will also be held that will allow students to discuss and critically address the issues which most affect their lives as high school students and members of the Pacific Islander community, so that they feel empowered to take the necessary action on these issues.

UCLA visitations

In order to promote the advantages of higher education and to give our students a full sense of what college is truly like we organize fieldtrips to the UCLA campus.

Annual Retreat

At the end of the year we take the students on a retreat to the San Bernardino Mountains.
