The following information was handed out at the meeting December 7th, updated January 8th.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to represent the ideas of Ayn Rand’s philosophy, Objectivism, on the UCLA campus to all those who are receptive.  We provide access to materials, discussions, and related events to members.

  At UCLA

We are an independent student group on the UCLA campus, registered with UCLA’s Center for Student Programming. As such, we have access to room reservation in Ackerman Student Union and Kerckoff Hall.  Because we espouse particular political beliefs, we DO NOT qualify to receive any funding from the Regents of the University of California.  We receive advice from the Ayn Rand Institute’s Campus Clubs officer and occasional financial assistance from ARI for Objectivist lectures.

  Brief History

The Objectivist Club was founded in October 1999.  Our first year was modestly successful.  We hosted a well-attended lecture by Dr. Harry Binswanger, “Objectivism: Ayn Rand’s Philosophic Revolution” and another in the spring quarter given by radio talk-show host, Andrew Lewis.  Club members had the opportunity to dine with Mr. Lewis prior to the evening lecture.  Our most rewarding—though ultimately tragic—activity was helping to organize and demonstrate with The Americans to Keep Élian Free.  The demonstration, which took place at the Federal Building in Westwood, was a huge success—with over 500 people in attendance, American flags soaring, and a speech by Dr. Leonard Peikoff—despite Élian Gonzalez’ eventual and despicable return to Cuba.

The Way We Work

Goals and Membership

Membership is not exclusive to UCLA students; all are eligible.  Our goal this year is  to provide an outlet for serious study of Objectivism, so we do suggest that members will have read a significant amount of Ayn Rand’s writings.  Again, anyone is welcome to participate, but meetings will focus on more advanced study of Ayn Rand’s ideas.

 Dues

NEW! We will no longer charge the $15.00 fee for membership.  Meetings will be free and open to anyone.

 Guests

We recommend regular attendance to our meetings because the material covered will build on itself each week. Nonetheless, guests are always invited to attend.

 Meetings

New! The 2001 year will focus on studying Dr. Leonard Peikoff's Introduction to Logic. At each meeting we will hear a new part of the course.

We will also be holding informal dinner get-togethers.

 Missed Meetings

A summary of each meeting’s discussion will be accessible on our Web site at http://www.studentgroups.ucla.edu/reason.

 Communication

We will notify you of meetings via e-mail.

If you wish to contact us, please send an e-mail to Lane Ratchford or Matt Moreles at: objectivistclub@hotmail.com.

Members are encouraged to take advantage of our new Web site: http://www.studentgroups.ucla.edu/reason.  The calendar will list upcoming events. The discussion board allows members to contact one another without going through us.
