Meeting of 11/15/99

1. Meeting with CALPIRG officials: Dave, Clayt, and Smitha

2. Kevin Rudiger from the Environmental Coalition (EC) was around when the university first tried a recycling program

a) Ask him how it went and what happened

3. Coalition Building

a) IFC can't do it as a whole, but each individual house can join

b) Contact USAC directly by talking at their meetings

- good resources because they have contacts

- the Assistant Chancellor presides over the meetings, good way to contact him

c) Find out if ASUCLA is an extension of the Administration

- Board of Directors?

d) Cultural groups on campus: incinerators in low income areas

- They might want to join

- contact Liz Geyer

e) contact GSA groups

f) ask all other groups to help during petitioning and class raps

g) contact Academic Departments to sign on

4. Plan a meeting with Jack Powazek in January

a) double-check with Mark Dittmer that Facilities Management knows who we are and that we want to work with them on recycling

5. Ask the SAA to find out which UC campuses are recycling and how

6. Look through the CALPIRG contact cards from the General Interest Meeting (GIM) and find people that were interested in internships with recycling

7. Group Platform:

a) long-term will be university-wide waste management program

- buying post-consumer products

- formation of compost heap

b) form a sort-term plan spanning year

8. Current ratios of bins, as reported by FM:

a) 470 trash cans

b) 60 paper/newspaper bins

c) 12 recycling bin clusters

9. Contact Steve Davey on USAC for Facilities Commission

Meeting of 11/18/99

1. Ask Dittmer when the bins are coming

2. Lindsey Taub as volunteered to design a logo for group.

3. Recycling Rally

a) Ask Scott Carter whether using real quarters in Recycling Rally game is legal

b) Daily Bruin

- place an Ad in for Recycling Rally

- Graziella will write Viewpoint article

- submit an entry into "What's Brewin'" for rally

c) e-mail members the time and location for Rally prop building

- bring supplies: poster paper, pens, etc.

d) start saving soda tabs for game

e) Smitha will be the "go to" person at the rally because Anna and Henry have class at different times.

f) e-mail volunteers for times that they can table at rally

4. Coalition Building

a) ask Khathi which groups (old and new) she has contacted

b) give Taylor specific goals for contacting Greeks

c) ask USAC's individual commissions to sign on

5. Contact Jerry Mann

a) who would know more about ASUCLA's bankruptcy and failed recycling program?

6. Approximately half of the trash at UCLA that is not recycled is incinerated and the other half goes to landfill, according to Dittmer

a) contact the City of Commerce about waste energy source

7. Recycling System used by UCLA

a) trash DOES NOT get formally sorted, except for "entrepreneurial" collectors (ie homeless)

b) There are two kinds of trash sites: a "dirty MRF (Material Recovery Facility)" and a "clean MRF"

- dirty MRFs will sort through trash and find recyclables

- clean MRFs require that the recycling already be sorted, this is the method UCLA uses

c) find out from other schools how much they recycle to judge how much our campus could potentially recycle

- Berkeley and Stanford are two good examples

d) Consolidated Services is the trash hauler for UCLA

- landfill

- incinerators

Meeting of 2/8/00

1. Recycling Bin Maps - idea is make people more aware about the locations of bins

a) Make sandwich boards with locations of bins on campus maps

- Xerox enlarged maps at Kinkos (Pulse can't handle)

b) post location maps on bulletin boards in lecture halls

- do class raps to ask people if they know where recycling bins are

c) post maps in dorms: Hedrick, Rieber, Sproul, and Dykstra

d) Alyssa proposes idea to recycling bin maps in dining halls

- Alyssa will look research

- good place for visibility because people sit and read the placards everyday.

e) Ask FM about placing the maps on the sides of trashcans.

2. Proposed a Greek recycling collection day

3. Ask Terry how many more years of funding will the grant provide for program

4. Research recycling facts, find out how the other UCs do it: contact Clayt

a) UCLA recycles under 20% of its waste, while other UCs recycle about 40%

5. the Earth Day rally will be April 20th, we will have a booth (more later)

6. Making bins more known about

a) Create system of bin monitors?

- they would observe how often the bins are used, and try to figure out why people don't recycle more

- they can also be used to encourage recycling, by standing next to bin and urging passersby to recycle

b) Write a Viewpoint article this quarter urging students to stuff the bins.

c) ask FM if they can paint recycling posts to a more noticeable color

8. News: 4 more bins are on the way, making the total now 16

Meeting of 2/24/00

1. Dining halls are completely booked up for fliers, will have to try later

2. Jessica volunteered to write Viewpoint article

a) brainstormed with her on ideas

b) set deadline

3. Keep Recyclables Out of the Trashcans (KROT)

a) time and day set for volunteers

b) ask CALPIRG members to help

4. Assigned more coalition groups

5. Sandwich board maps

a) should be laminated and put out when the weather is better.

b) should decorate maps with actual bottles and cans

6. Cost for one recycling cluster is around $1,600

Meeting of 3/3/00

1. Recycling Dumpsters and collection

a) February 3rd, the dumpsters are full for the first time since the cluster bins were bought - first collection

- plastic: 290 lbs.

- glass: 1060 lbs.

- aluminum: 110 lbs.

b) February 22 (approx. 3 weeks later)

- plastic: 260 lbs.

- glass: 720 lbs.

- aluminum:160 lbs.

2. Earth Day Rally

a) April 20th, 11am-2pm

b) try to get prizes from outside of Westwood: Wild Oats/Whole Foods, catalogs

- pencils and pens

- magnets

- weeples

- bouncing globe ball

c) flier to advertise for Earth Day 2000 (ED2K)

d) requested four tables at rally for games

- sign ups for tabling

e) Sandwich boards with ED2K ads to be placed at:

- Bruin Walk

- Powell

- Lu Valle

3. Mass KROT proposed for end of the year

4. Put recycling maps and ads in orientation planners and Mortar Board

Meeting during GIM Brainstorming:

1. Host competitions for who can recycle the most

a) internally between Departments, clubs, and/or halls

b) externally between difference campuses

c) winner gets a pizza party?

d) publish weekly results

2. Create a message board / suggestion place online

3. "Did You Know" Facts

a) in the Daily Bruin?

1. currently in process of calling haulers for the fraternities/sororities

a. same process for off-campus housing

b. need to find out what trash company is contracted and if company

provides recycling services

2. Greek committee has to contact different houses to discuss their contracts

a. Gabe from SAE will get information from his house

B. Education/Publicity

1. signs for sandwich board should be laminated (everyone agreed)

a. signs will thus last longer and be protected from weather

2. made contact with UCLA radio, but not tv

a. we need to write a script and turn it into Sarah's box at UCLA radio

3. a thank you card needs to be made for Melanie

a. Melanie designed our webpage

C. Sponsorship

1. meeting with Mike Cohn needs to be established

a. Gabe and Donna are going to meet with our advisor, Mike Cohn (CSP

officer) to ask him what commitments his department will take on

B. Facilities Management ordered 4 new bins

1. total of 24 bins on campus; goal is for 30 by end of the year

d. 100 Medical Plaza deli (we agreed on this location at meeting)

C. ASUCLA mug discounts

1. ASUCLA does not give discount if mug is not purchased within current

academic year

a. Sonia volunteered to speak to ASUCLA

D. An article outlining simple ways to reuse and recycle needs to be written

E. ASUCLA does not sell any recycled paper notebooks

1. we need to contact the ASUCLA purchaser and attempt to get more recycled

products in Ackerman

a. goal is to have recycled notebooks by beginning of next quarter

   1. Gabe contacted Consolidated Services

      - problem is that fraternities only have one big dumpster and lack room for a recycling bin

   2. Our top priority is to get fraternities to recycle

      a. need to establish direct connection with IFC & garbage services

      b. Education/Publicity members also can contribute efforts to this cause

B. Education/Publicity

   1. Public Service Announcement for UCLA radio will be written after meeting

   2. Signs promoting Bruins for Recycling will be laminated for longer use

   3. Everyone needs to sign Thank You card for Melanie (designer of our webpage)

   4. Our table tents will be displayed 5th week in dining halls

C. Sponsorship

   1. Gabe & Donna have not met with Mike Cohn because he was out of town

      a. will attempt to reach him soon

D. Grants Update

   1. we need 70 new recycle bins on campus or $100,000

   2. Julia already sent the grant proposal to the Department of Energy

      a. hoping to get $93,000 from them

   3. If anyone knows of any companies who would be interested in donating money for an environmental cause & to create a better image, contact Julia

   1. Sohna & Germaine will talk to ASUCLA regarding mug discounts & recycled notebooks

   2. Terry will talk to Jerry Mann

           c. should houses share one recycling bin? they have to start somewhere

       2. decided to pursue recycled notebooks by further talking to Jerry Mann
