Our Philosophy

Here Alyssa (in center) tries out one of our many Recycling Games.

Many of our Bruins for Recycling members notice that most people don't think
and act in a conservative way, constantly wasting valuable resources. On
a campus as large and renown as UCLA, it is both surprising and disappointing
that there are not more ways to recycle. With nearly 37,000 students and
hundreds more staff and faculty members, it is easy to imagine UCLA as its
own city. And a city, of course, can generate thousands of pounds of waste
per day.
However, this need not be the case. Through simple changes in habits and
procedure, much of this university's waste can be Reduced, Reused, and Recycled.
For instance, people can do things such as not using disposable coffee cups,
writing on the back of used paper for phone messages, and refilling water
bottles instead of discarding them after one use. It is our belief that most
students, faculty, and staff members will make efforts to curb waste production
if given the opportunity. Essentially, that is one of the main goals of Bruins
for Recycling: providing the UCLA community with the opportunity to recycle.
Bottomline, recycling can be the first and easy step in preserving our
environment. Through recycling, materials can be refined and made ready for
manufacturing of new products, thus preventing the extraction of additional
natural resources. The mental effort one makes when consciously deciding
to recycling is a good start to a more developed sense of ecological
responsibility. It is hoped that individuals will extend this awareness of
the world they live in to educate others and become more actively involved
in environmental preservation.
