Recycling in the Greek Houses: One large challenge that Bruins for Recycling initiated last spring was working to add a recycling program to all of UCLA's 28 Greek houses. With anywhere between 20 and 70 members living in one building, a substantial amount of solid waste is generated, none of which is recycled. Creating a recycling program requires Bruins for Recycling to set up a contact with each house to keep communications available. We will contact different dumping services, investigating prices and acceptable materials for the services. Once that is established, a dumpster must be secured for the house, either leased or owned. Finally, the house members need to be educated properly with what exactly can and cannot go into the dumpster, as well as setting up a program that works for them inside the house (who empties the smaller bins from inside to outside and when). Grant Research:Another project that we are focusing our efforts into is grant research. Over the next year, we plan to apply for various grants that could potentially earn money for the university to buy more recycling clusters for beverage containers (at around $1500 a piece, the university has only been able to slowly add them around the campus), as well as pay wages for students to empty them.
