Online Resume Submission 2005
By Katie Hanson

The UCLA Career Center has a 24-hour online resume submission
and campus interview scheduling system, called BruinView. BruinView helps
you find, apply for, and schedule on-campus interviews for full time jobs
and internships. You can upload multiple resumes and cover letters that
you have created on your word processor and then submit them to various
firms that hold on-campus interviews. The following is a step-by-step
guide to help you complete the first part of the interviewing
process.
1) Print out a copy of your DPR from URSA. You will need
information from your DPR to register on BruinView.
2) Go to http://career.ucla.edu/BRUINVIEW/Students/RegistrationandLogin.asp.
This will take you to the BruinView Log-in page.
3) If this is the first time you have used BruinView you will need to
register. Under "Register for the First Time," click on "Student
Registration." If you already have a BruinView account, skip ahead
to step 8.
4) Follow the instructions to register for Basic BruinView. Under Part
C, enter your nine digit student ID number followed by the letters "LA."
You will then need to choose a personal user name and password. Make sure
to write down or remember your user name and password, because you will
need it the next time you want to access BruinView. When you have filled
in all of the required fields, click on "Click Here to Create Your
Account!"
5) Follow the instructions to complete your personal profile. Use your
DPR to find the needed information.
Note: Be accurate about your GPA! Any misrepresentations can result in
severe consequences.
6) Once your personal profile is completed, you will be instructed to
create your Contact Information and Educational Profile.
7) Once you have completed your profile, you will be prompted to check
over the information to ensure that it is correct and create your account.
If you need to make any changes, click on the category title for that
section to make the necessary changes. Once you are satisfied with your
profile, click on "Submit Profile." Note that you will be able
to go back at any time and change your profile, so do not worry if you
later decide to change something such as the location preference.
8) You are now ready to use Basic BruinView. However, in order to use
BruinView to access on-campus interviews, you will need to upgrade to
BruinView Campus Interviews. This is new to the website and is only available
to currently-enrolled UCLA students. The cost for this service is a one-time
fee of $40. You can sign up for this service by clicking the link under
"Search Campus Interviews and Info Sessions" on the homepage
after you log-in.
9) Once you have followed the instructions to make your payment, you will
be able to access Campus Interviews! Click "Search Campus Interviews
and Info Sessions" and change the search options preference to "Campus
Interview Positions."
10) BruinView will redirect you to a new page. Scroll down to the bottom
of the page to where it says "Interview Dates." Enter the current
date and 6/30/05. Then under "Keyword Search" enter the name
of the firm in which you are interested and then click "Perform Search."
You do not want to fill out any other fields because it will narrow your
search and you might not be able to find the position you want.
11) Scroll down to the appropriate job position for which you are interested,
and click on the "Position Title." This is where you will find
firm details, position titles and descriptions, contact information, and
deadlines for resume submission and interview signup. Make a note of these
dates and deadlines.
12) Once you have registered with BruinView, you will be able to post
up to ten resumes. To post your resume, click on "My Resumes"
on your BruinView homepage and then "My Resumes" again. Then
click on "Click here to add a resume."
Note: In order to upload your resume, you must have already created your
resume on a word processor (like Word) and have it saved to your hard
drive. When uploading your resume, you will first be instructed to locate
your resume on your browser. Do not worry about making mistakes. You can
always go back and edit or re-upload your resume.
13) Give your resume an appropriate title and then click "Upload
Resume." Understand that the title you give your resume will be seen
by multiple firms, so it is a good idea not to use the name of a particular
firm in the title.
14) BruinView also allows you to store up to ten cover letters. You can
do so by clicking on "My Cover Letters" under "My
Resumes" and then following the process outlined in step 12.
15) The process for uploading your DPR is the same. Click on "My
DPR" also under "My Resumes." Note that you will have to
copy your DPR from URSA and paste it into a Word document in order to
upload it to BruinView.
16) Once you have uploaded your resume, cover letter and DPR, you can
download them to see how they look. Once you are satisfied with the way
everything looks, you are ready to submit your resume to the various firms.
17) To submit your resume to a particular firm, locate the job position
in which you are interested and scroll down to the bottom of the screen.
Click on the instructions under "How to Apply." Before submitting
your resume to any firm, read and make sure that you meet the specific
qualifications of the position for which you are applying. If you do not
meet the specific qualifications, the system will automatically screen
you out and you might not be able to submit your resume to that firm.
Note that most firms only allow you to apply to one position, so make
sure you pick the one you want!
18) Follow the on-line prompts to select your appropriate resume and add
an optional cover letter and unofficial transcript (your DPR that you
uploaded). You are now finished applying for that particular position.
You can now apply to other firms.
19) When submitting your resume to firms, keep in mind that most firms
allow you to submit only one resume. This means that you must choose only
one location and only one position. Be sure to read each firm's specific
requirements carefully. If the system does not allow you to submit a resume
online to a particular firm, call the firm and ask if you can fax or e-mail
your resume to them.
20) Once you have submitted your resume to all the firms in which you
are interested, you will need to periodically check "My Personal
Organizer" to see if you have been selected for an interview.
21) Go to http://www.career.ucla.edu/ and log in using your BruinView
user name and password in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. Choose
"My Personal Organizer."
22) Select "View Resume Submissions." Here you can find out
if you have been selected for an interview. If you have been selected,
you will then need to sign up for an on-campus interview time slot. Follow
the posted instructions.
23) If you have been selected for an interview, you may
need to complete a background information sheet prior to your interview.
You can pick up a background information sheet at the career center, which
is located on campus in the Strathmore Building.
If you have any questions, your SAS officers will
be more than willing to help you. Make sure to get a head start registering
on BruinView. DO NOT WAIT until the night of the deadline to submit your
resumes, as the system will be busy and slower than normal, and you do
not want to miss any important deadlines. Good luck!
