Beyond the Web: Designing rich media applications for language learning and assessment
The use of websites for language learning and assessment is becoming fairly common. While the web represents a powerful medium with tremendous reach, it is becoming increasingly accepted that websites mark a step backwards in terms of interactivity. Current trends in web development, therefore, call for the designing of rich media applications that have the potential of enhancing positive user experience. Drawing on tenets from the fields of web design and usability engineering, this talk focuses on strategies to incorporate rich media into language learning and assessment. Given the rapid pace at which newer and better technologies are introduced, the problem of language learning and assessment should necessarily include the exploration of cutting edge technologies. To this end, this talk will also provide an overview of some emerging technologies such as virtual reality caves and the Access Grid. The potential these technologies hold for language learning and assessment will also be discussed.
