The Southern California Association for Language Assessment Research (SCALAR) is inviting proposals for papers for the 5th Annual SCALAR Conference:  SCALAR 2002. 

PLENARY SPEAKER: Liz Hamp-Lyons, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University

The SCALAR 2002 conference will be a two-day event consisting of a half-day symposium on Wednesday, May 15th, 2002 at UCLA and a full-day conference on Thursday, May 16th, 2002 at Pasadena Sheraton Hotel.

Paper presentations are scheduled for Thursday, May 16th, 2002 from 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM.  Papers should address topics relevant to second and foreign language assessment.  Priority in the program will be given to graduate student proposals. 

Presentations will be 20 minutes in length, followed by a 10 minute discussion. 

Proposals should include

    the title of the paper;

    the lead presenter’s name, affiliation, and e-mail address;

    the names and affiliations of other authors;

    a list of equipment needed for the presentation;

    a 300 word (maximum) abstract of the paper.

The deadline for proposal submissions is Monday, April 1st, 2002. Proposals must be submitted through e-mail to Xiaoming Xi (xxm@ucla.edu).

SCALAR is a student run organization formed by graduate students and faculty at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) in 1997.  Its goal is to promote awareness, research, and practice in language assessment in the southern California region.  Each year, SCALAR organizes a conference to provide graduate students and other language assessment researchers and practitioners with opportunities to present their research and to receive feedback and guidance from leading scholars in the fields of education and assessment.  For more information on SCALAR, visit our webpage at the address listed below.
