Student Coalition for Marriage Equality was started in January, 2005
at UCLA. Its goal is to become a statewide, grassroots, student run
organization, focused solely on the issue of marriage equality. We believe
that college students have amazing potential to do amazing things, if
only they could become organized and mobilized around this issue. We
recognize the fight for same-sex marriage as the great civil rights
fight of our generation. Forty years ago, another civil rights battle
consumed the country, and it was the support and dedication of students
that helped win the day, and made African-Americans equal members of
our society under the law. We have been giving our great battle, one
that has the chance to almost eliminate legal discrimination against
LGBT peoples once and for all in California. We will not stand by and
watch our state pass the same anti-gay constitutional amendments that
other states have passed. California has always been on the forefront
of societal reforms and equal rights, and by becoming the second state
to legalize same-sex marriage, we will continue that tradition. SCME
is going to get thousands of students across the state involved in this
fight, and show the great political power that young people still wield.
