Now that the California Air Resources Board has adopted the Scoping Plan for implementing AB 32, the California Global Warming Solutions Act, we in Southern California are at a critical point in determining how businesses, government agencies, and community organizations will respond.

This day-long symposium at UCLA will focus on the challenges and opportunities faced by governments, industry, and communities in the LA region arising from AB 32. The goals of this event are to explore the specific responses of the region and to lay the groundwork for future collaborative initiatives and research that will help all of us reduce our carbon footprint.

A Panel Discussion on Critical Topics in Sustainability.

Practitioners from food security, climate and air quality, water resource management and urban design will discuss the broad implications of sustainable development on their professions, while talking about their professional role in addressing these topics. Event participants will also have an opportunity to meet the panelists in small groups, learning more about these critical topics as well as career opportunities related to sustainability.

Earth Day Events: Sustainability Fairs and Future of Food Screening.


11:00 am – 2:00 pm: Sustainability Fair in Bruin Plaza
2:00 pm – 4:00 pm: Green Coffee Break in Bradley Intl. Hall
4:00 pm – 7:00 pm: Sustainability Fair in De Neve Plaza
5:00 pm – 7:00 pm: “The Future of Food” Screening and Organic Food in the De Neve Plaza Room

From 11am-2pm, E3: Ecology, Economy, Equity and ESLP (the Education for Sustainable Living Program) will host a fair in Bruin Plaza. Student groups will have informational tables set up to educate students about ways to get involved with sustainability on campus, and local companies including Tom’s Shoes, Arbor Sports, and Native Foods will be represented. Students will sell “cups of dirt” (dessert creations containing crushed Oreo cookies and gummy worms) for a small donation. Proceeds will benefit an environmental non-profit organization. Additionally, ASUCLA will offer a discount on all of its environmentally friendly products at the UCLA Store. Students will have the opportunity to win eco-friendly prizes.

From 2-4pm, there will be a “Green Coffee Break” in Bradley International Hall.

From 4-7pm, SWC EARTH (Student Welfare Commission Environmental Awareness, Recycling, and Terrestrial Health) will host an interactive fair in DeNeve Plaza. SUN (The Sustainable Urban Network), RAN (Rainforest Action Network), E3, ESLP, and the ORL (Office of Residential Life) Sustainability Theme floor will be represented at the fair and will lead various activities including flower potting/pot decorating, worm bin composting demonstrations, and a trivia wheel with prizes. Various information relating to sustainability in the dorms, composting, gardening, recycling, fossil fuel dependence, etc. will also be available. Music will be played.

From 5-7PM, SUN will screen the movie “The Future of Food” and serve organic pizza and tea in De Neve Plaza Room.
