Halloween Milonga 2007!

Milonga - PGBS Tango Orchestra - Practica - Orango Tango - Parking/Directions - Pictures - FAQ

The Tango Club at UCLA is a group of friendly, laid-back students who learn argentine tango by classes at UCLA and outside, practice tango at weekly practicas, and host monthly dances ("milongas") as well as workshops taught by outside professional tango instructors. Beginners and non-UCLA public are welcome to attend! More information about dance events in the Los Angeles area can be found at Tango Afficionado and the Caltech Tango Club website.

We are currently looking for more officers so please talk to us if you are interested.

Videos of Argentine Tango:
Social dance: what you would typically see at a milonga or a practica.
Performance: shows the vast potential of what can be done to tango music.

The Tango Club at UCLA is currently sponsored by Very Fine Dance Shoes, which has offered us great deals on dance shoes!

A huge thanks to all the volunteers, instructors, and performers at our previous milongas!

PGBS Tango Orchestra

Join us as we experience the growth and development a new tango band--the PGBS Tango Orchestra Project, under the guidance of Pablo Goldstein and Bernard Selling. The orchestra, which rehearses for two hours before each milonga, then plays for dancing for half an hour or so, at 9:00 pm, consists of four violins, two cellos, bass, keyboard and several singers. Accordionist Goldstein and saxophonist Selling are also accomplished flutists. We are all amazed at the beautiful, dynamic sound this orchestra has achieved in such a short time.

Check out our pictures of the Beach Milonga (April 08, Will Rogers State Beach) and the Mallonga (May 08, Century City). We will send out emails through the mailing list for future Orango Tango events.

Parking at UCLA

Our milongas are located in the Kerckhoff Grand Salon click to see map. Our practicas are in the Kerckhoff Art Gallery click to see map.
Link to UCLA Transportation and parking.

Parking at street meters and in UCLA parking garages equipped with meters is $2 per hour. After 9 pm, parking is free, except in lot 6. If you don't want any hassle, you can go to the UCLA parking kiosks and pay $8 for the entire night for parking in a garage. It is recommended that visitors unfamiliar with parking at UCLA ask for assistance at one of the information booths when entering the UCLA campus, since information presented here may have change.

If you don't mind walking a little, one place to find free street parking is on Gayley Ave. and in adjoining streets. You could start at Gayley Ave. and Strathmore, and then proceed north or south along Gayley or west along Strathmore. This is the student housing area, and on weekends it may be both crowded and a tad rowdy.

Alternatively, free parking is available in the upscale residential neighborhood east of UCLA (such as along Warner Ave. or Woodruff Ave). Parking is free after 6 pm and all day on Saturdays and Sundays. Make sure you park in an area where parking is permitted according to street signs. Also, make sure you have a map and familiarize yourself with the streets so you don't get lost in the dark!

Good luck in finding parking!

FAQ

Do I need to know how to Tango? Absolutely not, we teach beginning and intermediate lessons year round. The saying goes, "if you can walk, you can tango."
Is this the same as Ballroom Tango? No, Ballroom tango is more rigid and there is more emphasis on memorizing patterns and routines. Argentine Tango is a dynamic dance in which each step is interpreted differently depending on the music and the mood of the dancers. For a better description of Argentine Tango, look at the Tango Afficionado website
Do I need a partner? No, Argentine Tango is a social dance and as such we rotate partners.
Can I bring a partner? Absolutely. Many people prefer to dance with just one person.
Who joins typically? Everyone. We have a great mix of males, females, Americans, foreigners, undergraduate, and graduate students. Moreover, during our milongas, dancers from the LA community will come, which introduces an even broader range of people. Tango can be a great opportunity to meet both people you would typically socialize with and people you would never get the chance to socialize with.
