TAIWANESE CULTURE NIGHT: "Title <No Name>"
Vision: What does it mean to be Taiwanese American? How do you define what it means to be Taiwanese American?
As Taiwanese Americans, we often struggle to integrate into American society while maintaining our cultural heritage. We are challenged with striking a delicate balance between our two identities, Taiwanese and American. In America, the mannerisms and ideologies derived from our Taiwanese heritage are sometimes misunderstood and not well receieved. However, in Taiwan, we are criticized for our lack of understanding of Taiwanese culture. This year, through TCN, we hope to reconnect our fellow Taiwanese Americans with their Taiwanese heritage, and at the same time showcase the uniqueness of Taiwanese culture.
Join us as we explore what it means to be Taiwanese American, and define the meaning of being Taiwanese American for yourself.
Where:Freud Playhouse, May 24, 2008 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM
Ticketing Information:Tickets are free and obtainable from CTO. For community members interested in attending this event, please contact Richard Liang at richard.liang88@gmail.com to reserve tickets.
What Is TAU About?
The Taiwanese American Union (TAU) is dedicated towards bringing Taiwanese "culture" to the UCLA campus community and to also bringing fellow UCLA Bruins out to everything Los Angeles has to offer.
What's more, TAU offers a community for those who are like-minded; for those who share common interests and backgrounds. Come see what we're all about and we guarantee that we are more than just a group of students sharing something as arbitrary as "Taiwan" but rather what Taiwan has offered us in binding us together.
Although based in the University of California, Los Angeles, TAU is in no way limited to the UCLA campus. As an active member in numerous networking organizations, co-sponsored events are often held. From Ski Trips with other Universities to volunteering with TAP (Taiwanese American Professionals), the opportunities are endless.
Speaking of opportunities, TAU offers connections to the right places. With solid relationships to Taiwanese American organizations, professionals, and employers around the greater Los Angeles area (and Northern California, Canada, Taiwan), anything from part-time jobs to full-time employment may come from time to time. Examples of internships range from pharmaceutical companies to biotech firms or even movie productions companies.
So with that being said, we cordially invite all that are interested to come and see what we have to offer: from food to fashion, music to movies, opportunities to connections, friends to family.
WANTED:
Can you speak Mandarin and English fluently? Do you know that "林老師" has nothing to do with Professor Lin? Hell, can you speak more Japanese or Taiwanese than Mandarin? If you answered yes to any of the above then we want YOU to come out to TAU.
Got a hidden art talent you'd like to show off?
Submit your art to TAU and we might put it on our fliers!
Drop off artwork at the TAU table on Bruinwalk or email to tau(at)ucla(dot)edu
