December 2008-Esomeprazole Magnesium

Esomeprazole Magnesium
Brand Name: Nexium

Uses:
Esomeprazole magnesium is indicated for the treatment of heartburn and other symptoms associated with Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). It is supplied as delayed-release capsules for oral administration or in packets for the preparation of delayed-release oral suspensions. Along with heartburn, it is also indicated for
short-term treatment of esophageal erosion, reduction in the occurrence of certain gastric ulcers, and the eradication of the bacteria H. pylori.

Mechanism:
Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that suppresses gastric acid secretion by specific inhibition of the H+/K+-ATPase in the gastric parietal cell. By acting on the proton pump, esomeprazole blocks the final step in acid production, and reduces gastric acidity, thus leading to the inhibition of gastric acid secretion. The magnesium salt is highly soluble in water.

Side Effects:
Esomeprazole is well-tolerated. The most common side effects are diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headaches, rash and dizziness.
