Pill of the Month
February 2008- Lisinopril Oral
Brand Names: Prinivil, Zestril
What it is: This drug is predominantly used in treating patients who suffer form high blood
pressure, also known as hypertension. Another use of this medication is on those
patients who have suffered an acute heart attack or in conjunction with other
drugs to manage congestive heart failure. Since hypertension can possibly lead
to strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems, this medication can help manage
these health problems. It is even being used on diabetic patients suffering
kidney damage.
Side Effects:
It is possible for a patient to experience headache, dizziness, lightheadedness,
fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, dry cough or blurred vision as your body responds to
the medication. If these effects do not go away and remain persistent you should
contact your physician or pharmacist immediately.
Mechanisms: In humans this medication has been found to inhibit angiotensin converting
enzyme (ACE), which prevents it from catalyzing the reaction that converts
angiotensin I to the vasoconstrictor substance, angiotensin II, which in turn is
involved in aldosterone secretion. Therefore, inhibition of ACE eventually leads
to suppression of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, which leads to reduction
of hypertension and prevention of heart failure.
