Isotretinoin
Brand Name: Accutane, Amnesteem, Claravis, Sotret, Roaccutane
Uses: Used to treat severe acne and in some situations can be effective against certain skin cancers.
Mechanism: Isotretinoin is a retinoid (a derivative of vitamin A) that shuts down sebum oil production and shrinks sebaceous glands by altering DNA transcription, which reduces formation of acne.
Side Effects: Adverse effects are similar to those of a vitamin A overdose, and can include dryness of skin, lips and mucous membranes, cheilitis, itch, skin fragility, skin peeling, rash, flushing, photosensitivity, nose bleeds, dry eyes, eye irritation, reduced tolerance to contact lenses, raised liver enzymes, headaches, and hair thinning. In addition to some minor effects listed above, isotretinoin can have dangerous side effects such as pregnancy complications, depression, suicidal tendencies, imparied night vision, cataracts, optic neuritis, menstrual disturbances, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreatitis, hepatitis, corneal opacities, papilloedema, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, skeletal hyperostosis, and extraosseous calcification
