September 2008-Warfarin

Warfarin
Brand Name: Coumadin

Uses:
Warfarin is an anticoagulant and is used in order to prevent blood clot formation. It is usually prescribed for patients who have clots in their lower extremities to inhibit extension of the clot. This also reduces the risk of pulmonary embolism. Warfarin is also used in patients with atrial fibrillation to reduce stroke risk.

Mechanisms:
Warfarin prevents blood clot formation by inhibiting the synthesis of clotting factors, specifically by inhibiting vitamin K-dependent clotting factors.

Side Effects:
Side effects include hemorrhaging, necrosis of skin (gangrene). Bleeding can occur in any organ/tissue, and when it happens around the brain it may cause paralysis and severe headaches. Additional side effects include: hair loss, diarrhea, purple toes, and yellowing of the eyes and skin.
