September 2009-Oxycodone HCl (Oxycontin)

Oxycodone HCl
Brand Names: Oxycontin

Uses:
Oxycontin, tablets are an opioid analgesic supplied in 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, 80 mg, and 160 mg tablet strengths for oral administration. The tablet strengths describe the amount of oxycodone per tablet as the hydrochloride salt. OxyContin Tablets are a controlled-release oral formulation of oxycodone hydrochloride indicated for the management of moderate to severe pain when a continuous, around-the clock analgesic is needed for an extended period of time. It is to be administered every 12 hours. Oxycontin is a strong narcotic pain-reliever and cough suppressant that is related to morphine, codeine and hydrocodone.

Drug Mechanism:

The precise mechanism of action is not known but may involve stimulation of opioid receptors in the brain. Oxycodone does not eliminate the sensation of pain but decreases discomfort by increasing tolerance to pain. In addition to tolerance to pain, oxycodone also causes sedation and respiratory depression

Side Effects:
Adverse events such as constipation should be anticipated, which could be treated with a stimulant laxative. Other opioid-related side effects such as sedation and nausea are usually self-limited and often do not persist beyond the first few days. It is also addictive so use only when prescribed.
