About us

We have oodles of fun at Project WILD!

History

Project W.I.L.D. began in 1987 to help students in the Monterey Park/Rosemead as a free English tutorial and mentorship program. The main focus of our program is to teach students how to speak, read, and write English. However, our program accomplishes much more. Through the use of weekly tutorial sessions, W.I.L.D. helps immigrant teenagers and their families transition into America. In addition, our tutors act as positive role models and help our students through their adolescent years. For twenty years W.I.L.D. has helped teenagers achieve academic success, avoid gangs, and increase self-esteem. Teachers and faculty all agree that Project W.I.L.D. has had a tremendous impact on student in the Garvey School District.

We are part of UCLA's Community Service Commission, forming one of its 18 projects.

Goals

Through tutoring and engaging in mentoring relationships with the students, we strive to

  1. assist our students in improving their English proficiency and thus providing them with a necessary tool to excel in school
  2. ease the student's transition into a new culture through our various activities, games, and field trips
  3. expose the students to positive environments through our field trips
  4. encourage students to learn

When do we tutor?

We tutor every Saturday from 9 am to 12 pm. In an effort to provide a stable learning environment for the students, we ask that each new volunteer remain in the program for at least one quarter (approximately five to six Saturdays and one field trip). No tutoring will be held during any long weekend holidays such as Thanksgiving or finals week.
