UCLA vs. ASU — February 24, 2008
As the winter continued to rain down on Southern California, UCLA Bruin Rangers shined. From the kickoff it was clear that the rain was putting a damper on passing and catching for both teams. Throughout the match numerous knock-ons were problematic. In the first 15 minutes sloppy play from both sides provided multiple scrums on the wet field. Number 8, Globerson-Lamb's attempt at going to the strong side on a scrum win provided no gain in ground but allowed the backs to begin to get their hands on the ball.
The backs, led by Bui and Griffin, showed tremendous awareness of the pitch, giving fullback Robin Barnett space for a number of breakaways up field. ASU kicked deep to give themselves room. The ball landed in Barnett's hands who herself counter attacked with an excellent kick. As ASU began to run the ball deep in their territory Bruins kept them deep and got a turnover. Blythe went in for a great run with Morrissette in support who went in for the try. Blythe converted. UCLA 7 — ASU 0.
UCLA began to settle down and played their game. Deep in ASU territory a knock gave the Bruins a 5m scrum. With loose play, Bradbury found the ball, popped to Globerson-Lamb, to Bui and in for the try. No conversion. UCLA 12 — ASU 0. The Bruin backline kept the ASU team in defensive mode. Again, back deep in ASU territory, ASU began to run the ball. Blythe found an opportunity to steal the ball mid-throw to run 30m. The backline looked amazing as passes from Griffin and Blythe continued to find Barnett for inserts. Barnet grubbered the ball with Griffin and Blythe chasing. Blythe in for the try. No conversion. UCLA 17 — ASU 0.
Second Half
Fullback Barnett kept up her excellent play second half. With a counter attack kick she chased down her own ball to nearly get the try. However, an ASU player held her back by her jersey which allowed Blythe to come in to pick the ball up for a try. No conversion. UCLA 22 — ASU 0. With flanker Mary Lee back in the game (she was sin binned) UCLA was at full force. Barnett continued to counter attack ASU's attempts to get down field by making great kicks for lineouts deep in ASU territory. Unfortunately for the Bruins, all game long ASU was getting in front of Globerson-Lamb in lineouts, frustrating the Bruins. The final score of the game was redemption for Lee. Globerson-Lamb started the run, popped off to Lee who broke through two tackles to make a leaping try. No conversion. UCLA 27 — 0.
