UCLA vs. UCSB — January 15, 2005

This past weekend the UCLA women's team competed in their first league game against division I UCSB.

The UCSB women's team has been going strong for three years and has amassed a big, powerful, fast, and aggressive team. That being said, UCLA did an outstanding job of holding their own against a team that has been playing together for a few years.

Early on, as UCLA was still trying to organize itself on the pitch, UCSB scored after a successful run down the sideline. Kick converted. UCLA 0 — UCSB 7. After that first score UCLA woke up and battled UCSB throughout the game. The first half ended with USCB on top. UCLA 0 — UCSB 12.

Second Half

The second half of the match was better than the first for UCLA. We held back every single maul attempted by UCSB, completed tackles, and kept threatening to score most of the half. After an offsides penalty at the 5-meter mark on our end, UCSB scored, again with the conversion. UCLA 0 — UCSB 19.

UCLA kept up without losing any aggression. If anything the intensity picked up right up until the 80th minute. The entire team stayed in support, getting the ball out wide and bringing it back in when necessary. The forwards were outstanding in their ability to keep punching, and thanks to a team effort (no ball hogging here) UCLA got the ball out wide. A maul formed, Griffin took a punch 3 meters out, and kept driving to score near the sidelines. No conversion. UCLA 5 — UCSB 19.

The game ended after two nearly-50-minute halves at UCLA 5 — UCSB 19. The ref was extremely complementary after the game, stating that he was so impressed with a team that kept up the aggression all the way through the game, never giving up. He is looking forward to seeing UCLA play again.

With our first game under our belts we're looking to this next weekend to play a ranked divisional game against Oxy, which sets our standing in the league. This game is going to be much more even, but just as individually challenging. We would love to have as much support as possible, so if you want to see some great rugby this weekend we're playing at Occidental College, at 11 AM.
