UCLA v ASU (January 30, 2005)
This weekend UCLA showed up to play a great game of rugby with the bigger, Division I, 2nd-ranked ASU. UCLA women showed just how big a heart they have as a team, never letting down, never giving up, and always supporting one another.
Although the first 30 minutes found UCLA defending themselves in their amber zone, ASU's back line was no match for our flat line defense, orchestrated in large part by Erin Kane throughout the game.
UCLA found themselves getting overtaken in the rucking, giving up ball all day. However, they had many opportunities to advance themselves. At 30 minutes in, UCLA created a maul with Michelle Kwandam rolling off and calling for support. With tremendous backing from the flankers, Diana Tran got the pitch and ran for 15 meters. Dara Yung took the pass from Tran to outrun three ASU players 40 meters for the try. UCLA 5 — ASU 0.
ASU was quick to respond, capitalizing on UCLA offsides (which plagued the Bruins all day) to score a try and two quick penalty kicks. UCLA 5 — ASU 13. UCLA, in their style of play, kept defending and attacking. With ASU in the red zone numerous times, UCLA was able to prevent them from scoring. Again, UCLA showed textbook execution of flat line defense.
With UCLA's defense holding strong, the offense needed a boost. Again, ferocious flankers Griffin and Tran were there to aid in another try. Yung, to Tran, to Griffin for the score. UCLA 12 — ASU 13. UCLA was on their heels while ASU's play was to do everything quickly. With that UCLA found themselves in the red zone again. ASU was able to score and convert a kick. UCLA 12 — ASU 20.
With a mistaken whistle blown as Middy was running for another try, UCLA found themselves at the end of the game. Final score UCLA 12 — ASU 20.
The backs had tremendous flat line defense, led by Ong and lock Kane, while the forwards dominated in open field play, led by Tran, Griffin, and Negrete. Congratulations Girls! Next weekend we meet two divisional competitors. Get ready for some more hard rugby at UCLA's North Atlantic Field, 11 AM.
