UCLA vs. ASU — February 4, 2006
Kick-off was at 10:50 AM. UCLA was off to a slow start, getting a knock-on and repeated penalties. ASU capitalized off a scrum with two forward punches. UCLA 0 — ASU 5 (10 minutes). Back deep in their own territory, starting from a scrum, UCLA was able to get out past the 22. Flyhalf Dara Yung capitalized on a slow ASU retreat from a penalty and ran 55 meters to go in for the try. UCLA 5 — ASU 5 (15 minutes).
The Bruins started to show their teamwork with excellent support. The team focused on passing, looping, and taking advantage when ASU wasn't looking. Again, off an ASU penalty, our scrum half took a quick tap in for a try in the corner. Fullback Middy Pineda made an excellent kick to make the score UCLA 12 — ASU 5 (30 minutes).
Second Half
Second half both teams showed they were tired of penalties, dropped balls, and high tackles. ASU found the weak link in UCLA's defense on the guard side of rucks and mauls, utilizing one player at a time for punches, gaining 5-10 meters with each run. The Bruins were able to contain ASU until the 60th minute, when ASU scored off of two quick punches. UCLA 12 — ASU 10.
With five minutes to go, ASU's attack was relentless. They were able to drive down field with punch after punch, never getting the ball to the backs. UCLA 12 — ASU 15. Although UCLA showed tremendous teamwork, they were unable to capitalize once they got down field. ASU scored in the 75th minute with forwards getting a punch off the scrum half at every ruck. Final score, UCLA 12 — ASU 20.
The Bruins improved in every aspect of their game from the previous weekend and showed tremendous heart. They'll take the next few weeks off, and will play their next match at home, at NAF, on Sunday, February 26th.
Thanks to all the players who were able to make the trek and play with sickness and injury! go bruin rangers!
