UCLA vs. ASU — January 27, 2007
What an exciting game from start to finish! These two very evenly-matched teams fought back and forth until the final whistle. Bruins led off with two quick penalties, waking them up to a very attentive ref. ASU responded with two of their own. From there the game went back and forth with dropped balls and a few knock-ons. Team support was excellent. The Bruin pack did an amazing job of wheeling on defensive scrums, but for the most part UCLA was on the offensive. Forwards, led by Sonia Glosserman-Lamb and captain Middy Pineda, were quick to drive through every ruck, getting clean ball for scrum half Vicky Zalameda.
UCLA took a lineout and ran the ball to the 5, where with a little ASU fumbling, UCLA had an offensive scrum. Unfortunately, the Bruins lost their own scrum (the only time), and ASU kicked the ball. The kick was blocked, and outside center Tia Blythe picked it up to go in for a rookie try (which was also, apparently, a birthday try. Happy Birthday Tia). UCLA 5 — ASU 0.
Second Half
The forwards must have scrummed down 20 times this match but never once lessened their intensity. Three scrum downs in a row led to ASU kicking deep. Winger Bui ran wide after a great catch with the back line in support. Excellent passing and sidestepping from Bui to Blythe, and Blythe to Griffin led to Griffin scoring under the uprights. Pineda to kick. UCLA 12 — ASU 0.
ASU fought back, keeping the Bruins on their toes. Their inside center crashed through to gain ground, and UCLA was on defense. UCLA was able to fight back with quick rucking, and Pineda—with a pick—found a hole with the Bruin back line in excellent support again. Pineda and Griffin played back and forth until Pineda found another hole in the defense to go in for the final try. UCLA 17 — ASU 0.
The Bruins held ASU in their red zone for the rest of the match. It was the tough Bruin flat line defense, from Schmidt, Griffin, and Blythe, that proved too much for ASU, who were continually looking for holes. None were found.
UCLA's starting lineup consisted of five fresh rookies. Barnett, Castillo, Hsieh, Schmidt, and Blythe. They, as well as each and every person on the field, did a phenomenal job keeping up the intensity throughout the match.
