UCLA vs. UoA B-Side Match — January 28, 2007

The first game out for the season for the second team proved to be a great learning experience in working together and learning how to deal with referees.

Numerous uncalled high tackles throughout the match led to Bruins fighting to protect their necks. Bruins were on the defensive most of the match due to dropped balls, but picked up the intensity as the game wore on. U of A was able to capitalize on quick rucking and avoided tackles.

Some highlights of the match were Patel stealing two balls mid-air. Berenberg was able to pick many balls coming out of the scrum, had quick defensive tackles, and was very aggressive throughout the match. Castillo, who played at prop all weekend, continues to improve with every match. After the first half, Mejia began to settle down with a few changes in the tight five and was able to begin stealing the ball in defensive scrums. (Eunice would be proud).

Wolfe captained her first match as a UCLA Bruin. Emily, the "new girl", experienced her very first rugby match, and as a lock. She's hooked. Chang made some great tackles throughout the match. Mendoza did well at #8, but is still finding her ground at such a crucial position. Urena was able to settle down at scrum half during the match and got in and dug out the ball when necessary. Chui was always in good supporting position, finding the ball more often in the second half for a few gains. Chan found some running room on the outside. Hurley, her first game back in one year, showed that rugby is like riding a bicycle.

A few first team players were able to make quite a difference in the match, as well as lead the way for some rookies. Griffin made a few try-saving tackles at fullback and the sideline enjoyed watching Globerson-Lamb at prop, as she "touched" the opposing prop with her intensity. Although Kwandham got the wind knocked out of her at one point in the match, she lead the way in forward intensity the entire game with great tackles.

Congratulations to those girls who had their first full rugby match.
