UCLA vs. UCSB — February 24, 2007

First side game kicked off at 11:15 with Kevin Battle, one of the men's Eagles coaches, refereeing. We received the kickoff, and UCSB was immediately on the attack. After a bit of sorting out, our flat line defense stepped up, we poached the ball, and Middy kicked for great field position. Shannon had a great run at wing, only to land badly on her knee and leave the game. It was to be fifteen minutes of back and forth in the yellow zone before UCSB's 8-man broke free of a few attempted tackles for a try. Conversion was missed. UCLA 0 — UCSB 5.

After a bit of readjusting to our tight five, we were battling back and forth in the yellow zone yet again. The teams were an even match, but after a few missed tackles UCSB's #1 followed up her wing on the outside and scored without a conversion. UCLA 0 — UCSB 10

But UCLA was just getting warmed up. After the kickoff, we were awarded a penalty play, and the second phase spun it out to Kelly, who ran through several UCSB players to score within minutes. Conversion missed. And we're finally on the board. UCLA 5 — UCSB 10.

A bit more messing about in the midfield, and our rucks were not getting us much clean ball. So in went Saerim, and within minutes, off a defense scrum at UCSB's 22, we drove them backwards. When the scrumhalf finally picked up the ball, all she could do was tuck as Mary and Middy broadsided her. Middy came up with the ball and sprinted the last few meters into the try zone, directly between the uprights. Tia converted, bringing UCLA to the lead at the half. UCLA 12 — UCSB 10.

Second Half

The second half got off to a great start. Deep in our red zone, off an offensive scrum, Michelle tossed a weekside pass to Vicky, who passed out to Jennifer for a run back to midfield. UCSB was not to be detered, and continued to drive us back deep into our red zone. But out of the melee, Kelly Griffin took the ball in our try zone and ran it 100 meters down the field to be tackled at the 1-meter. Have no fear. Tia was in support, and picked that ball up for yet another rookie try! UCLA 17 — UCSB 10.

UCSB was in a panic. Between the forwards' ferocity and Robin's try-saving tackles, they realized they needed to pull out all of the stops and get the game back under control. Within minutes their #8 was off again, and scored in the far corner; no conversion. UCLA 17 — UCSB 15.

At the 65th minute, UCLA began to crumble. After a few warnings, Middy was sin-binned, and lack of fitness began to show its underbelly. With UCLA down a man, UCSB smelled weakness, and scored rapid fire, three times, converting all three. Middy returned for the last few minutes, but we couldn't rally again, and the final whistle blew at UCLA 17 — UCSB 36.
