UCLA vs. Oxy B-Side Match — February 11, 2008

Monday was a great cool night to play rugby, and Oxy had a multiple-sport lined field, under the lights, with a crowd of fans to watch.

UCLA received the kick-off at 7:55 pm. Set to play three 20 minute periods, Oxy was off to a fast start and capitalized on a fumbled attempt to catch the kick, and UCLA was immediately on the defensive in their own territory. We had yet to get an even flat line and it took Oxy only five minutes to sneak in a corner try for the early lead. No conversion, score 0 — 5.

UCLA kicked off, determined to take advantage of the field positioning, and we spent the next 15 minutes in the yellow zone, mostly in Oxy's territory, attempting to push through for a score. Try as we might, Oxy's poaching was more than we could handle, and UCLA couldn't keep the ball for more than two or three phases. But our defense held, and Oxy was unable to penetrate our red zone again. Period one was called at approximately 21 minutes.

Subs were made: Malina in for Cecelia, Tiffany in to hook, Crystal in to prop, Annie and Liz to 8 and Flank, and Rachel and Alex off. We kicked off to Oxy, but they were quick to return and break through into our territory. UCLA on the defensive side again. After an Oxy knock, we had a scrum on our ten meter, but we lost the ball, and the Oxy 8 man pick passed to the flyhalf, resulting in another try. No conversion, score 0 — 10.

Anita went in for Viletti, and we kicked off again. We fought hard in the middle of the field for 10 minutes. The forwards started to settle the rucks, and Carrissa and Julia Chui had quite a few nice connections. A few center plays were run, and we had some good things going. Then Oxy got a break through with their large inside center, and after a phase or two, scored a third try in the far corner. No conversion, score 0 — 15.

Viletti went back on, Crystal came off (Anita to 8, Annie to prop). UCLA was on the attack from the kick off, and offense looked great. Good hands, no knocks. We were threatening to score as second period came to a close at 40 minutes.

Final period, Oxy kicked to us. On the defensive, deep in our own territory, Oxy had a line out on the far side of the field, sure to push the final ten meters, when UCLA stole the line out, got the pass out to the backs and Jackie inserted for a 70 meter run. Almost pushed out of bounds, Jackie passed to Brittany in support, who ran the ball the final 10 meters to score. Annie made a spectacular conversion attempt from the far side of the field, but just missed. Score: 5 — 15.

UCLA finally had a rythm going. Brittany was stealing the line outs defensively with no lift. Julia Chui had glue on her hands and caught every pass from Carrissa. Annie had a great defensive kick that was chased down by Jackie for a gain of 35 meters. But the clock was not on our side. Time was called at 55 minutes, final score Oxy 15, UCLA 5.
