Welcome to the UCLA Women's Rugby Football Club! We hope this page can answer your questions, but the best way to learn more about our team and rugby is to come practice with us.
Why should I join?
Rugby players are a unique breed, and an excellent group of friends. As a rookie, you will be matched up with a returning player--your "vet"--who is dedicated to acting as your "big sister" away from home. She will look out for you, answer your questions, and help make your experience with UCLA Women's Rugby as enjoyable as possible.
What's the time commitment?
For Fall Quarter 2014, practices are scheduled on the IM field for Monday 5:30-7:30pm, Wednesday 5-7pm, and Friday 7-9pm. Practice times will change every quarter depending on field availability. We also have additional conditioning with the team twice a week on Drake, usually in the evenings on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We encourage fitness sessions at the gym on your own time if you can't make it to the conditioning, though many players choose to work out in pairs or small groups throughout the week. Games and tournaments will occur on weekends, typically a Saturday.
What will I need to play?
New players should obtain two pieces of equipment as soon as possible: cleats and a mouthguard. Soccer cleats are fine, however you may find later that you prefer metal cleats. Team shorts and socks are included in dues. For practices, wear something that is comfortable and which you won't mind getting dirty or otherwise destroyed.
I don't know how to play rugby!
Don't worry, most of us didn't know how to play when we started either. Here's a short video that might help give you a general idea, but don't give up if you're still confused! Ask us questions, we love talking rugby!
